However, introducing these premium products to the Indian market was not easy. Convincing customers to invest in costly, high-quality equipment was a challenge. Many buyers questioned the value of such investments, especially when cheaper alternatives from countries like China were readily available. But Mehrotra Biotech stood firm, committed to distributing only the finest equipment that met our rigorous internal quality standards. This phase of struggle became a defining chapter in the company’s journey.
The Challenge of Quality Versus Cost
The Indian market has always preferred affordability, often at the expense of quality. This has been aggravated by Chinese products bombarding the market. China utilised its cost-effective labour, established many manufacturing hubs, and eventually flooded the market with cheap products, both in price and quality. For Indian consumers, the immediate cost savings often outweighed the long-term benefits of durability and performance. Amid this competitive landscape, Mehrotra Biotech found its saving grace in the loyalty of early customers who valued quality and became repeat buyers. Their trust helped the company weather the storm.
Taking the Leap: From Distributor to Manufacturer
Realising the limitations of being a distributor, Mehrotra Biotech boldly decided to manufacture its own equipment. This pivot marked the beginning of a new era for the company. Manufacturing, however, was a vastly different ballgame. It demanded meticulous attention to detail at every stage—from procuring raw materials and bending metals to assembling controllers and delivering a polished final product.
More importantly, building a capable team that supports our vision and securing the necessary financial investments were extremely difficult. The latter were not just logistical hurdles but transformative steps that required a shift in mindset. The team had to move beyond the culture of “jugad” (makeshift solutions) and embrace precision and innovation. Starting small, the company gradually expanded its product range, learning and adapting to each new challenge.

Years of distributing European products had equipped Mehrotra Biotech with invaluable insights into market needs and technological trends. The service team’s expertise in repairing advanced equipment and the sales team’s understanding of key features gave the company a competitive edge. Additionally, our exposure to stringent international standards served as a benchmark for the quality we aspired to achieve.
The early days of manufacturing were marked by trial and error. Initial products struggled to gain market acceptance, but Mehrotra Biotech’s established relationships within the healthcare industry provided a lifeline. With perseverance and continuous improvement, the company introduced its first indigenous product: a state-of-the-art Biosafety Cabinet. We are the first company in Asia featuring a TFT touchscreen controller, filter health display, admin access, and 100% self-air flow compensation technology, which ensures maintenance of negative pressure till 99.99% clogging of the filter, hermetically sealed front sash, all in one cabinet. This compact design meets international standards and addresses specific market needs.
