A Bold Vision to Electrify Mobility
Electric mobility holds tremendous promise in addressing climate change. However, in the logistics space, EVs face two significant hurdles: affordability and agility. Petrol vehicles have spoiled us with their near-instant back-on-the-road experience of under five minutes. In contrast, even the fastest EV charging solutions take upwards of an hour, adding inefficiency and fatigue.
Fast charging also comes with a steep premium, making it less appealing to businesses managing tight margins. The logistics world needed an alternative that preserved the agility of petrol while leveraging the sustainability of electric mobility. At Swapp Design, we took on this challenge to create a solution as quick, seamless, and cost-effective as refueling petrol vehicles.
The Birth of Swapp Design’s Innovation
Battery swapping was the obvious solution to enable agility, but traditional approaches hit a roadblock: large, heavy batteries. Swapping these required expensive, cumbersome jigs, making it financially and operationally impractical.
We reimagined the problem and innovated on two fronts:
- Modular Battery Technology: Instead of one massive battery pack, we designed smaller, modular battery units that could be swapped individually. This eliminated the payload problem while introducing new complexities, which we solved with our patent-pending runtime modularity solution. We’ve filed a patent on our unique Battery Management System (BMS) architecture and the runtime modularity feature. This innovative approach ensures seamless operation by allowing battery modules to intelligently share the load, compensating for any module that may need time to recover. It’s a game-changer for uninterrupted performance and maximized battery life.
- Autonomous Mobile Robots: These cost-efficient, frugally engineered robots autonomously handle battery modules. At the prototype stage, a SwappBot costs ₹2 lakh, but with scaling, we’ve designed the price to drop to just ₹1 lakh. These bots work in fleets like a swarm of bees, orienting themselves under the EV regardless of how they are parked, seamlessly swapping batteries in under five minutes.
The Power of 1-Minute Swapping
We are pushing the boundaries further, working to achieve a 1-minute swap. This breakthrough allows Swapp Stations to serve more users, maximizing the throughput-capex ratio. This efficiency ensures that Swapp Stations are EBITDA-positive from the first year, and franchise owners recover their investments within just three years of operation.
